Every buyer asks this in the same order: how much does it carry, and what does it cost to get here. Most answers you will find online stop at the first question. This one answers both, using the figures from our own stock rather than a general rule.
The short answer
A 6×4 has three axles and drives two of them. An 8×4 has four axles and drives two — the extra one is a second steering axle at the front, which is what lets it carry more weight legally and spread it over more ground.
On our dump trucks that difference is:
- 6×4 — 25 to 30 tonnes payload
- 8×4 — 35 to 45 tonnes payload
Call it about 40% more per trip. If your haul is long, your ground is decent and your loads are heavy, the 8×4 pays for itself in trips saved.
If your roads are poor, your loading is uneven or your sites are tight, the extra axle stops being an advantage. A four-axle truck turns wider, grounds out more easily on a bad approach, and gives you two more tyres to replace. Buyers working quarry tracks and unmade site roads mostly take the 6×4, and they are not being cautious — they are being correct for their ground.
That much is the standard advice. The part nobody publishes is what happens to the freight.
Sea freight is charged on volume, not weight
A truck is light for its size. On the ocean leg you are not paying for the tonnes; you are paying for the cubic metres the vehicle occupies — its CBM, the box its overall length, width and height describe.
Which means the question “does an 8×4 cost more to ship?” has nothing to do with axles at all. It depends on how long the truck is. And that is a different question from how much it carries.

The short-bodied 8×4 occupies less shipping volume than the 6×4 — 75 m³ against 77 — and carries ten to fifteen tonnes more. Same ocean leg, more capacity, marginally less volume. On that pair the axle count costs you nothing at sea.
Go to the long-bodied 8×4 and it is a real difference: 102 m³ against 77 is about a third more volume on every leg, for the same 35–45 tonnes the short one carries. You are paying to ship a longer body, not a heavier truck.
So the decision is not 6×4 versus 8×4
It is two decisions, and they are independent:
- How much do you need to carry per trip? That picks the axle configuration. 25–30 t, or 35–45 t.
- How much body do you need? That picks the length — and the length is what your freight is calculated on.
A buyer who needs 40 tonnes and takes the long-bodied 8×4 because it looks like the serious truck has bought a third more shipping volume than the short-bodied one that carries the same load. If the material is dense — ore, wet sand, aggregate, anything where you hit the weight limit long before the body is full — the long body is volume you are shipping and then never using.
If the material is light and bulky, the long body is the whole point and it is worth every cubic metre.
What to work out before you ask for a quotation
Three things, and you can do them at your desk:
- The heaviest single load you actually run, not the biggest one you have ever run. That decides 6×4 or 8×4.
- The density of what you carry. Dense material fills the weight before the body. Light material fills the body before the weight.
- The worst piece of road on your route. That is what decides whether a fourth axle helps you or fights you.
With those three, the configuration answers itself — and we can quote against a real requirement instead of a truck name.
